Evil Dead II Blu-ray review

Welcome to the first Blu-room review.

The first Blu-ray I will be reviewing will be the 1987 cult horror-comedy film, Evil Dead II.

Ash (Bruce Campbell) has returned to the dreaded cabin from the first film and unleashed the terrors of the necronomicon. Now stranded at the cabin with a group of strangers, Ash attempts to survive the night or be dead by dawn.

Evil Dead II is a great horror film for a first time view, but after multiple views it transforms into a fantastic comedy film. Bruce Campbell is the main attraction and he delivers many laughs. From over exaggerated use of blood to slapstick comedy, there is never a dull moment. It moves at a smooth pace and has no slow downs. The film itself could carry the blu-ray, but that is not the case.

Film: 4/5

The video and audio quality for this blu-ray release is slightly below average. Evil Dead's video is slightly average a times, but once scenes involving special effects it drops significantly. It's a lot to ask for a 1987 low-budget film to look perfect 26 years later. The audio isn't much to complain about or even praise. The score is lovely to hear, but could have been a bit more louder at some points.

Video Quality: 2/5
Audio Quality: 3/5

As for special features, Evil Dead II is not packed like modern day releases.
  • Audio Commentary by Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Scott Spiegel and Greg Nicotero
  • Evil Dead II: Behind the Screams Featurette
  • The Gore The Merrier Featurette
  • Fast Film Facts
  • Trailer
The audio commentary is fantastic and we get stories about all the events that transpire through the making of Evil Dead II. It's very interesting to hear the torture the cast endured, but still enjoyed and loved filming. It's a track I suggest anyone to listen to.

Evil Dead II: Behind the Screams is just montage of photos taken by Tom Sullivan. While The Gore The Merrier is a great look behind the scenes retrospective by many who work on the visual effects and they show some deleted scenes (especially one involving Ash and a squirrel). Fast Film Facts are basically some facts popping on the screen during the movie which are basically the same facts from the commentary. Then there is the basic theatrical trailer.

Overall for a blu-ray release it lacks on the special features and doesn't warrant an immediate buy.

Special Features: 2/5

Overall: 2.5/5

Evil Dead II is one of the best horror/comedy film and alone would be great addition to any blu-ray collector. Though with the recent release of the 25th anniversary edition released I suggest everyone to hold off from buying this edition. Thanks for stopping by the blu-room and stop by next week for a review of a classic teen film from the 1980's.

And now it begins...

Its been 10 days since I have decided to become a blu-ray critic and in 4 days my first review will be up. That's right 4 days. Originally I was planning to upload a review on the 2nd and last Tuesday of the month, but that schedule was made to accompany a Blu-room show. The show has been put on hold at the moment. It seems I won't be able to handle creating a show at the moment. Though this won't stop the blog instead this delay will help the blog more.

The new schedule for the blu-room will be as followed:

--Every Tuesday blu-ray reviews will be posted.

--Every Friday a week's blu-ray news will be collected and discussed.

--The 2nd and last Wednesday of the month will be a post of recommendations of blu-rays to pick up or deals to seize at the moment.

That is the new format for the Blu-room. You can expect some surprise reviews to pop up soon. While the schedule has change you can still expect Evil Dead II to still be the first blu-ray review, though different blu-ray will be added to fill up the month with more reviews.

This shelf will be filled with every blu-ray I review. Thanks for stopping by the blu-room and come back on Tuesday for Evil Dead II.

Welcome to the Blu-room

When I was young I always dream about either directing movies, writing movies or just producing movies, but I never considered reviewing movies. I will always look at reviewers like Richard Roeper or Michael Phillips and say to myself that I should aim to please the critics. "I should try to get reviewers on my side." But then as I continued to read more reviews I came to the realization...

Every review is different. Films from Rocky to Goodfellas to The Dark Knight have been given positive, mixed and negative reviews. Not every films is loved by the audience and also not every film is hated. What I came to realize is that reviews aren't fact but opinions. A movie that is panned by the critics can be praised by the audience.

I became fascinated with reviews and hoped to one day become a reviewer. While I would enjoy to review films by themselves, I'm also a collector of blu-rays. I would buy blu-rays and sometimes wonder if I bought the right movie this week. I would look up blu-ray reviews on YouTube and then the idea popped in my head. Why not do a web show that focuses on blu-rays? So now I'm grabbing my pile of blu-rays and looking up news for future blu-ray releases and making a show to dedicate on this topic.

While I might not review current releases at first once I get a handle on reviewing blu-rays I will be doing weekly and even daily shows if I get comfortable with it. As of right now you can expect two reviews a month. These reviews will be posted on the second and last Tuesday of the month. Listed below are the months and what blu-rays you can expect to be reviewed. As of right now I own 99 blu-rays but once the film I've been waiting for is released on blu-ray, you can expect newer films to pop up in the list and even have surprise reviews show up.
